The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, traditionally occurs on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month in China.
中秋节，亦称月亮节，在中国农历八月十五日举行。
For the Chinese people, this festival marks a significant occasion for family reunions. It holds the second highest importance as a cultural celebration after the Chinese New Year. The festivities include family gatherings for meals, offerings to the moon, illumination of paper lanterns, and the consumption of traditional mooncakes.
对中国人而言，这个节日是家人团聚的重要时刻。它仅次于春节，是中国第二大重要的文化节日。庆祝活动包含家庭聚餐、祭拜月亮、点亮纸灯笼以及品尝月饼等习俗。
Celebrating the Moon 赏月习俗
In Chinese culture, the full moon represents the essence of family unity.
在中国文化中，满月象征着家庭团聚的至高意义。
It is customary for Chinese families to arrange a table outside their homes, where they gather to admire the full moon while savoring delicious mooncakes. Parents often recount the legend of Chang’e’s journey to the moon to their young children. As a playful activity, children try to discern the image of Chang’e on the moon’s surface.
中国人通常在住宅外摆放餐桌，全家围坐赏月，共享美味月饼。父母常向孩子们讲述嫦娥奔月的神话故事。孩子们则将寻找月宫中的嫦娥身影视为一项有趣的嬉戏。
Honoring the Moon 敬月仪式
According to the folklore of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Chang’e, a celestial being accompanied by a small rabbit, resides on the moon. During the festival night, people set up a table beneath the moonlit sky, adorned with mooncakes, delicacies, fruits, and a pair of candles. Some individuals believe that through this act of veneration, Chang’e (the moon deity) may grant their wishes.
依据中秋节传说，嫦娥仙女与一只小兔同住月宫。每逢中秋之夜，人们于月光下设宴祭月，桌上摆有月饼、糕点、鲜果及一对点燃的蜡烛。部分人相信，通过祭拜仪式，月亮女神嫦娥将应允他们的祈愿。
Crafting Vibrant Lanterns 灯笼制作
This activity holds particular appeal for children. Mid-Autumn lanterns come in diverse forms, often resembling animals, plants, or flowers. These lanterns are suspended in trees or atop buildings, creating enchanting nightscapes.
这项活动深受孩子们喜爱。中秋灯笼形态各异，有的似动物，有的如植物，有的若花卉。灯笼悬挂于林木或楼宇之上，营造出迷人的夜景。
Some Chinese individuals inscribe their aspirations for health, prosperity, marital bliss, love, education, and other blessings on the lanterns. In certain rural regions, locals set off lanterns that ascend into the heavens or construct lanterns that float on rivers, releasing them as symbols of dreams taking flight.
一些中国人将健康、丰收、婚姻、爱情、教育等美好祝愿写在灯笼上。在一些乡村地区，当地人放飞升空的灯笼或让灯笼在河上漂流，仿佛他们的梦想也能随之实现。
Savoring Mooncakes 月饼品尝
The preparation and distribution of mooncakes stand as a defining tradition of this festival. In Chinese culture, the circle embodies completeness and unity. Consequently, the act of sharing round mooncakes among family members throughout the festival period symbolizes familial wholeness and solidarity.
制作与分享月饼是本节日的重要传统。在中国文化中，圆形象征着完整与团圆。因此，在节日期间，家庭成员分享月饼象征着家庭的圆满与团结。
